"everything is going to be alright" (14.03. - 19.04.2003):
Artist´s Statement

"Everything is going to be alright" is the name of my exhibition in gallery Gabriele Rivet. The name illustrates a wish and a hope that everything will be alright.
Living in a place with a precarious political situation like Haifa, Israel, it is not obvious that everything is going to be alright, especially in these months when every day the possibility of a missile gas attack exists because of the impending Gulf war between the US and Iraq. My family has already received new gas masks and new vaccinations to defend against new gas and hopes that everything is going to be alright. I say this sentence every day. This way I get rid of the fear, and I can keep going and working. Getting rid of the fear is very important. It helps you to organize your life in a normal way - living in an abnormal situation - where the real and evident threat exists of erasing life here in a few seconds by destructive forces created by the human mind. This sentence also relates to human forces that are based on hope, hope for life, peace and --surviving the economic depression.
The threat of a war also brought a serious economic depression making life unsure and precarious. The future is unknown. So this sentence provides my family and me with the power to go on, we assure each other that everything is going to be alright. The sentence will be present in the exhibition in various ways - as a street sign in front of the gallery, or as a writing using holes in the wall that are filled with rose petals - symbols of beauty, poetry, and fragility.
In order to get rid of the fears there will be games in the gallery. Playing is one way to get rid of fears of catastrophe and destruction. The games will be puzzle games that relate to the complicated political situation, or coin games. Playing and being together is important in order to make things alright.
Some works will relate to light. Light brings hope and reduces darkness. The simple light bulb will have the day of the week written on it. Each day the light bulb will be changed so that the light bulb always corresponds to the day of the week. This makes you aware of the days of the week and helps you to count the days while you wait. Wait and hope that everything is going to be alright. During the exhibition in the gallery there will be white paper on a table. Visitors will be able to write wishes and hopes on these sheets, roll them up, and then insert in holes in the floor. Writing your wish and putting it in the hole together with the wishes of other people can bring good energy to the room (of the gallery) and can drive out the evil forces of destruction, war, poverty, sickness, fears, etc. Being together - putting together our wishes in one field can change the world and bring smiles to our faces - repeating everyday that everything is going to be alright!
